Including Greek Sing, the chapter won first place in four of seven Greek Week competitions: Big Men’s Tugs, Pyramids, and Collegiate Bowl. This was the first time that a Sig Ep Tugs Team has reached the finals of the tugs competition let alone winning the event.

As a result, the chapter repeated as winners of the over Greek Week points race. The chapter’s participation in Greek Week was dedicated to Brother Jesse Mounce, who died unexpectedly on February 8, 2008.

TUGS CHAMPS!

Training pays off as Brothers bring new pride to Illinois Nu

The"Big Men" rope of Sigma Phi Epsilon established themselves as serious competitors after winning the championship tug at the EIU campus pond Saturday afternoon. SigEp made quick work of the challengers, Sigma Pi, finishing them off in just over a minute. Saturday's win came after the men defeated Lambda Chi Alpha and Sigma Chi earlier in the week to earn a spot in the final round.

Although SigEp's big men were smaller than most other ropes competing, they used technique and conditioning to overcome being out-sized. Coached by Adam Weaver and Paul Laubersheimer, the men began conditioning and training in January for the event.

Sigma Phi Epsilon also saw success with their "Little Man" rope as they earned third place, defeating Pi Kappa Alpha in under 30 seconds earlier in the day. Led by senior Mike Nowak, the little men improved from the year before but came up short after a hard fought 3-minute tug against last year's champions, Lambda Chi Alpha.

The TUGS event concluded this year's Greek Week at Eastern Illinois University. SigEp once again took 1st in the overall points race, making this the second consecutive year the Fraternity has been crowned Greek Week Champions.

Both the "Little Men" and "Big Men" ropes would like to thank the friends, family and alumni who came out to show support.

Illinois Nu reclaims Greek Sing Compeition

Uniform attire, precision movements, ear-to-ear grins, and unmatched four-part harmonies. All off this was presented to family, friends, and the entire EIU Greek Community on Sunday afternoon as the gentlemen of Sigma Phi Epsilon took the stage to reassert their status as singing champions. The men filled Lantz arena with songs of Billy Joel which included River of Dreams, Piano Man, For the Longest Time, and Lullaby. Directed by Matthew Gidcumb, the brothers gave a flawless performance of varying vocal ranges and harmonies that far surpassed any other contenders in the fraternity devision.

This year's win marks the third straight year the Fraternity has earned first place honors. Previously, Illinois Nu won Greek Sing for eleven consecutive years. Altogether, Sigma Phi Epsilon has won the trophy 14 times since it was founded at EIU in 1991.

SigEp would like to thank all of the family and friends who supported us. The Fraternity also gives a special thanks to Matthew Gidcumb, who devoted much of his time to perfecting the performance while still earning his MBA as a graduate student at EIU.
